Yesterday we left Bad Dürrheim in bright sunshine ☀. We continued to Weissenburg (France) and then to the Deutsches Weintor. From here, we took a walk towards the vineyards. There was a sign indicating the average wine consumption per person per year in Germany, which was on the lower side. So let's enjoy a glass of wine. We found a beautiful spot in the vineyards to park our vehicle. As we enjoyed a stunning view of the almost complete Palatinate Forest with a reddish-blue sky, we let the day come to an end. Drifting leaves gave us the first feelings of autumn. I realize that we have spent an entire season on the road.
Today, we continued to Johanneskreuz near Trippstadt. Once again, we hiked to the Saegmuehle campsite, which we know from mountain biking. Afterwards, we treated ourselves to a schnitzel in the beer garden. Here, we met a couple on a Harley. We got into a conversation, and they told us about activities in their club. I was once again absolutely amazed 😲 They will be dressed as Santa Clauses on December 6th and will be touring to collect donations for a children's hospice in their area. Last year, they collected 25,000 euros. Isn't that amazing? What a great idea. We also immediately made a donation.
One year ago today, around 5:00 p.m., Burkis had his accident. We talk about it again in more detail. In the end, we are both glad that it turned out this way and that he has regained a lot of function. If the injury had been a vertebra higher, he would have been paraplegic. Thank you for the outcome.
Now we are standing in Gimbsheim right on the banks of the Rhine. Today is our last overnight stay, and it feels strange. I have never missed a bed or any other material comforts of home. I am looking forward to meeting family and friends, going to beer gardens, and celebrating Lenny's birthday.
