I had booked a Hammam and massage appointment for 11 a.m. I was supposed to meet in front of a hotel. I waited from 10.45 a.m. to be allowed to leave the ship, but it was not until 10.15 a.m.
I couldn't reach the hotel on foot in time, so I had to take a taxi. The journey took me through unattractive, dirty areas and ended up in front of a hotel that didn't even look bad, but had received some scathing reviews.
As it turned out, this was not the place for my treatment. I was picked up in a minibus and given another city tour, which lasted even longer than the first. We got out in front of a house that didn't inspire much confidence.
It looked nicer inside. Two young women gave me lockers for my jacket (it was actually fresh and foggy today) and my valuables. Then I was allowed to climb up a narrow staircase three floors. There was the Arabian steam bath, the Hammam. A not too big room, tiled, with two loungers that were also tiled.
I was given disposable underpants and changed. An older woman poured water over me, then rubbed me with oil. I was allowed to stew for 15 minutes, then water again, brush, stew, water, rub with sand, water, stew...
The whole thing would have been a bit more relaxing if there hadn't been hammers and percussion drills going on next door. At some point I had enough of the noise and heat, so I had myself washed one last time, got a bathrobe and went down one floor.
There I was first given a tea, then I was led into a massage room. The masseuse was young and attractive and strong. Sometimes the massage was a bit painful. Nevertheless, after an hour I felt good. I got dressed and got my things from the two lockers. Everything was still there. I left a tip and joined the driver.
I explained to him that he should no longer drive me to the hotel but to the harbor. He did this and received a generous tip.
After that, all that was left on my agenda was lunch and dinner.
