On December 7, 1941, the Japanese Imperial Army's air force attacked the Pacific Fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor, almost completely destroying it. This event led to the United States' entry into World War II.
A historic place like this must, of course, be included in our itinerary, so we head to Pearl Harbor.
Pearl Harbor can be reached in just over an hour by taking public bus lines 20 or 42 from Waikiki. We have already purchased tickets for Pearl Harbor online, but tickets can also be obtained on-site.
We decide to take the tour of the Arizona, the ship that was heavily damaged and sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The ship took 1,102 sailors down with it, becoming their grave.
The Arizona has been registered as an official war grave.
The tour of the Arizona begins with a 20-minute film about the background of the attack on Pearl Harbor and shows the attack on the ships.
A feeling of oppression comes over me. It's terrible to see so many people lose their lives, once again showing that there are no winners in war.
Afterwards, we take a navy boat to the Arizona Memorial. We also see many Japanese tourists here.
The memorial is built above the wreckage of the Arizona and the ship can be seen very clearly. There is a plaque for the soldiers buried at the bottom of the sea.
Heavy oil still leaks from the wreckage. Some say these are the tears of the fallen soldiers.
Visiting this memorial makes me very pensive. I wonder why humanity doesn't learn from such terrible events in which so many people lost their lives.
In addition, on the grounds of Pearl Harbor, you can also visit the USS Missouri. This ship was not in the harbor during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese surrender was signed on this ship on September 2, 1945.
Furthermore, the USS Bowfin, a navy submarine, is anchored here.
A historic place that leaves a lasting impression. This is also part of a trip to Hawaii.
