05/03/2023 from Alice Springs to Tennant Creek
Today we can sleep in, have breakfast leisurely, and then pack up together, today is a travel day. We can still fill up with fuel for a discounted price of 2.01 AUD, in Kings Creek we paid 3.02 AUD per liter of diesel.
There is no one on the road, right at the exit of Alice Springs there is a warning for water on the road around Tennant Creek. We are driving at a cruise control of 100 km/h and making good progress, we stop at the Tropic of Capricorn and some roadhouses to look around or have a peek inside and watch the Aborigines buying cola. We don't feel very comfortable, they speak their language and we don't understand.
Right on time with the tropical circle, it gets more humid, greener, and filled with insects. Termite mounds are abundant along the road.
After many kilometers, we reach the Devil's Marbles, granite rocks eroded by weathering, lying there as devil's balls. The Aborigines believe that these are the eggs of the giant snake from their Dreamtime and consider some places as their sacred sites.
There is water on the road before Tennant Creek, it rained heavily a few days ago and now the water is slowly receding. The water and the heavy trucks are causing damage to the road, and it rattles heavily when we drive through the water for the first time. With each subsequent time, Frank becomes more professional. There are also several water crossings scheduled for tomorrow. The museum we selected will only open again tomorrow, the mine we wanted to visit is closed, it is flooded.
At the campsite, we meet Germans and Swiss people, exchange our travel experiences, and take a dip in the pool.
It's hot and humid, today we will sweat.
