Kougelhopf in Strasbourg

Strasbourg, the last stop on our journey, is a very special city. According to the travel guide, it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The houses of the old town with buildings from various epochs are clustered around the cathedral, a magnificent Gothic structure, on the Grande-Île.

The Cathedral of Our Lady is sublimity in its purest form - it couldn't be more impressive. The astronomical clock located to the right of the choir dates back to the 16th century and is reminiscent of the Bern Zytglogge. The swallow's nest organ is even older.

It is gratifying to see that the city is full of life, so it is anything but a museum. Surprisingly, new residential quarters with exciting architecture have been created right next to the historic old town. One unmistakable signal in this direction is the new hall of the Gare du Strasbourg. Architect Jean-Marie-Duthilleul developed the complex, twisted building facade in collaboration with the engineering firm RFR. What is particularly interesting is that the glass extension is located in front of the station building, which was built between 1878 and 1883 and is a listed building. Perhaps this could be a solution for the renovation of the Lucerne City Theatre?

It is clear that we ate a tarte flambée with Münster cheese and drank an Edelzwicker in one of the numerous street cafes. And later, in a small bakery in a winding alley of the old town, we bought an original Strasbourg Kougelhopf. For the afternoon apéritif back in the camper van.
