Traveling in Durban and hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains

Басылган: 12.04.2018

On Thursday, 22.03, we had breakfast at 8 am and left for Durban at 9 am. The hotel was really nice and we had a great view of the sea. Unfortunately, it was raining, otherwise we could have gone for a swim. There were amazing waves, so there were many surfers out. I could have watched them for hours! We then walked around the city, all the way to the stadium, and in the evening we went to an Indian restaurant for dinner. They had an all-you-can-eat buffet, but I was still full from lunch, so I couldn't eat much...

On 23.03, we left Durban and drove to the Drakensberg Mountains. On the way there, we visited Howick Falls and the Nelson Mandela Memorial. Howick Falls is 59 meters high and really impressive. The memorial includes a museum and a sculpture. From afar, the sculpture forms his head using individual sticks. It's fascinating how artistic people can be! Then we arrived at the lodges. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily again...

On Saturday, 24.03, we set off early in the morning for a mountain hike in the Drakensberg Mountains. It was very challenging because we had to climb steeply and the temperatures were high. The view was very beautiful, and since we had 2 guides, we could split into 2 groups based on our walking pace. Of course, I was in group 2 :D We walked to a cave painting that was created 2000 years ago. After that, we could decide whether to continue walking to other viewpoints or turn back. I decided to turn back, because an afternoon by the pool sounded very tempting :D So, I relaxed by the pool with Saskia. In the afternoon, we had a delicious Cafe Amarula, and after dinner, we chatted a bit. George informed us about the history of Lesotho. In addition, Frank had the idea that since we are a completely German group, we could also cook a typical German meal once. Oh dear, that turned friends into enemies :D It was extremely complicated to accommodate so many people from all over Germany. Besides roast pork and schnitzel with potato salad, the discussion eventually turned to Swiss sausage salad and pancakes :D In my opinion, these are anything but German dishes. Well, in the end, the choice was made for schnitzel with potato salad. So far so good, but now it really started. The POTATO SALAD!! With vinegar, oil, mayo, pickles, regular cucumbers, meat salad, waxy potatoes, cold or lukewarm, broth or just salt and pepper. It never ended, and as you know, every grandma in Germany makes the best potato salad and that's how it's supposed to be :D In the end, we had one with mayo and one with vinegar and oil. It was something, but it tasted great!!
