Gestrandet in Juneau

After the impressive experience on the water, we visited Juneau. The 'liquid sun' accompanies us on this visit as well. The strong focus on cruise ships leads to many souvenir and jewelry shops. However, unlike Ketchikan, it lacks a certain charm. But a cool bookstore and the Ahi-Tuna Cevice for lunch brighten our mood again.

Despite the bad weather forecast, we tackled a hike on the West Glacier Trail the next day, with a view of the Mendenhall Glacier from the other, less crowded side. Beautiful trail with rugged ascents secured with taut steel cables.

In the afternoon, we wanted to book the continuation of our journey with the ferry and had to find out that suddenly all ships are fully booked until July 11. The 'Columbia', one of the large ferries, suffered damage on Friday and is out of service. This of course leads to an overload of capacities on the Alaskan Marine Highway. For now, we are stuck in Juneau. To reduce our dependence on the ferries, we are skipping Sitka, Haines, and Gustavus, and putting ourselves on the waiting list for July 4, 2018, to Skagway. We might skip Haines without Verny from Skagway.

Sunday 01.07.18 05:45 Wake-up call, dry at 49F (9°C). 07:30 Check-in at Juneau airport for the flight to Pack Creek. The salmon have not yet been sighted in the Admiralty Island area. Will we see brown bears in the Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary?
