Not slipping is half the battle!

Басылган: 02.02.2024

Things got pretty busy here in Alta last night! It really stormed. The snow came horizontally - and not a little snow at all! The car took a beating, but we got to the campsite safe and sound and in the morning it was all over!😁

We leave in the morning when the weather is quite nice. We head towards the North Cape, exactly to Skarsvåg (approx. 16 km before the North Cape). The road always has light snow drifts and is once again quite slippery. We see snow removal equipment and people shoveling out their houses everywhere. The further north we go, the more “mountainous”, we would say hilly, it gets. The sun comes out from behind the hills and as we come to Porsanger Fjord (one of the longest fjords in Norway) it enchants the landscape.

The fjord in the sunshine

We're very happy, even though the climbs and subsequent descents always take our breath away, because you never know whether you'll actually make it to the top, and going downhill with a subsequent curve isn't stress-free either. I often sit tensely in the passenger seat, especially on steeper inclines, and just keep my fingers crossed (that's why there are no pictures of uphill rides 😅). But Wilfried manages everything brilliantly as always, even if with a bit of a stomach ache.

It's going downhill again...

On the way we fortify ourselves at a gas station with waffles with cheese and coffee and notice that these gas stations, like Australian roadhouses, contain everything: grocery store, post office, coffee house, photocopy shop, etc. On the way back we meet 3 companions who we would never have expected: 4 motorcyclists - 3 Germans and one Swiss. You can see how they are constantly skidding, how they often ride standing up, but I think it really takes a lot to expose yourself to these conditions with motorcycles!

Motorcyclists in extreme conditions

The traffic is getting less and less and when we finally stand in front of “our” hut, we are totally relieved - the last descent was very long and steep. And the street is almost not cleared at all. That doesn't bode well for tomorrow - we have to go back up there! So we decide to put chains on today so that we can get to the collection point in front of the North Cape Road tomorrow without any stress. The last 13 km are usually driven in a convoy behind a snow plow. Then you have 1 1/2 hours at the North Cape and then you go back in the convoy.

Now we are tired and hungry. We'll warm up the Hütter's good chicken goulash from the Rexglas and sleep well in our nice, warm hut!

Our car is now “resting” with chains in the shoveled parking lot.

Echt spannend und zugleich relaxend (weil gemütlich zu Hause sitzend). Alles Gute weiterhin M&N

Danke fürs Dabeisein! Müssen die Reisezeit etwas verlängern… Es ist noch sehr weit nachhause…😁
