We're still in the eye of the hurricane.
Well, it's not that bad. However, the sea of clouds and the rain front keep swirling around themselves and won't let go. All the campers around us are annoyed. The couple from Bayern has been coming to this region regularly at this time of year for 11 years. But they have never experienced such bad weather.
Yesterday was a lazy day. It rained in the morning, so we only became active in the afternoon. We went by bike to the city again and extended our radius. We conquered the district where the famous German moderator used to live. It's a great place to stay, with fantastic apartment complexes, individual houses, and villas. The road sometimes goes quite steep uphill, which even challenges the e-bikes.
Yes, the road bike hasn't done much here yet. However, I'm already craving for cycling along the coast with its great roads. But not in this weather.
So what are the little joys of a frustrated vacationer? Shopping. We discover every new supermarket and enjoy local products. The refrigerator and cabinets are already so full that we won't starve in the next few days.
In a mobile phone shop, I inquire about a Spanish prepaid data card. My French card from free mobile is about to reach its data limit abroad. I'm really impressed with the card, as I got 210 GB for €20 in France. The international limit of 25 GB will soon be reached.
However, Spain doesn't offer such deals. In the shop, they offered me 35 GB for €20 from Simyo. Well, let's see what else is available.
At the central Plaza Espana, we treated ourselves to an afternoon wine on the outdoor terrace. It was so bad that we would have been better off going to the neighboring Cerveceria.
I really like the name. I have to think about whether it could be a name for a place here.
We're continuing our journey. It rained all night and pounded on the roof. It continued in the morning.
Man, when will it finally stop? The weather forecast is clear - there is no improvement expected from here to Malaga. Not far away is the Sierra del Cabo de Gata, a natural park with desert-like landscapes, a great hiking area (André, you would have experienced this in better weather).
In addition, Almeria and the desert of Tabernas are not far away, a historic location for all Italian-Western movies. Classics like 'Once Upon a Time in the West', 'Conan the Barbarian', 'Indiana Jones', 'Manitou's Shoe', and 'A Fistful of Dollars' were shot here.
We're following a recommendation from a camping neighbor from Gifhorn and set Agua Amarga on the coast as our destination - it's only 72 km without the highway. The place is said to be small but nice, and it has a good parking space with electricity, a washing machine, a shower, a toilet, and Wi-Fi.
The navigation system leads us along the coast, and we're absolutely thrilled with the route. The AL 7107 and later the AL 5107 always run along the coast on great roads with no traffic. Serpentine roads and fantastic beach resorts alternate. How beautiful it would all be in sunshine.
At Playa de Mojacar, one beach bar and restaurant follows the next. I would stay here immediately and spend a few days if...
Agua Amarga - the destination of the day is located in a valley after a hill. The small town is the southernmost part of the coastal road; from here, the road leads back inland.
The camper park is closed during lunchtime, but the gate opens when we ring the bell, and we can secure a good spot. The camper community mainly consists of German motorhomes from WST, SU, MIL, ILL, B, HVL, FN, and others.
From our initial observations, everyone has their 'curb honkers,' as Simone calls the small dogs that everyone regularly walks with. But we are the big exception; we only have each other.
A tour of the town is quickly done and brings the bittersweet realization that there are a lot of establishments here, and there is even a real wine shop, which we would definitely visit in good weather. But for now, we'll consume our huge supplies and eat in the motorhome.
Tomorrow we'll follow the trail of the Italian-Western movies.
