Île de Re

At the gates of La Rochelle, but so rural!

We moved from Brittany to an Aire naturelle campsite in La Flotte on the Île de Re. This was a tip from a friend of NSARDA Kent that really paid off! Thanks Jon!

The island is connected to the mainland near La Rochelle via a bridge. A trip there costs 8 euros, but that is money well spent as payment for the island.

We were traveling in St. Martin in Ars, in St. Marie and other places, especially La Flotte impresses with a simple but inviting structure, it could also be on Lake Garda. That's not meant in a negative way, because I really like Sirmione and Lazise when it's not high season. The high season would also be too much for me here, because in addition to many bikes - the island is a cyclist's paradise - there are also many tourists on foot or by car.

We got to the smallest town on the island, which was because the lady at the campsite responded so nicely to my poor French. The point went to her, who will then close her campeggio next Sunday.

The surrounding area was a surprise, because in addition to hikes on the hiking apps, there was also a small Mediterranean forest to explore, which our dogs found very exciting.

But I also don't want to hide the fact that the residents and café owners are very nice, you always feel welcome here. That is probably the secret of the island, because there is a lot of cyclist traffic here, as well as campers and, in the summer, also the people who rent many of the currently empty holiday homes.

We didn't do that, because our 12 square meters are quite OK as long as it doesn't pour out of buckets. In general, you can see that the oyster farmers and other providers are completely adjusting to the influx. Even during our visit to La Rochelle we saw oysters from the island and decided that we would rather taste them there and did what we had planned. It was worth it, the oysters were good!

I already had oysters at Mont St. Michel, they were a bit bigger here, but maybe I was just wearing my glasses today...

It's a little adventure if you send the satnav to hell and just drive off, it's certainly worth the try!
