Day 26: From Pine Creek to Litchfield National Park

Басылган: 27.07.2024

Since we didn't have as many activities planned for today, we decided to sleep in a bit. After breakfast, we packed our things into the car and set off. First, we headed north on the Stuart Highway.

Just past Hayes Creek, we turned onto the tourist route signposted as a side road. We stopped at Robin Falls and took a short walk to the waterfall.

Then we continued on the Stuart Highway from Adelaide River. Around noon, we arrived at Batchelor at the Litchfield Outback Resort. Our room was not ready yet, so we decided to head to Litchfield National Park first.

Just before the park, there was a small exhibition of so-called Zebra Stones found in a mine nearby. These are rocks that form regular patterns with iron inclusions.

Our next stop was the Magnetic Termite Mounds, huge termite mounds. These mounds are shaped on a relatively open surface with a very narrow side facing the sun to keep the temperature inside as low as possible. At first glance, they look like tombstones.

We then continued to Florence Falls. A short trail led to a viewpoint. Some stairs then led down to the water pool below the waterfall, where many bathers were enjoying themselves. There was even a proper staircase for entering the water. Since it was too crowded for us, we just enjoyed the view and moved on.

At Tolmer Falls, there were two viewpoints and a short trail along the upper stream. Swimming was not allowed here.

But swimming was possible at Buley Rockhole. It was less crowded here, so we took a refreshing dip. When we returned to our accommodation around 5 p.m., our room was ready - the Deluxe Family Suite. Apparently the only room of its kind, as it didn't even have a number like all the other rooms. But it was spacious with a living/kitchen area and two bedrooms. We had dinner at the hotel's bistro.

For the record:

Accommodation: Litchfield Outback Resort, Batchelor

Driving distance: 305 km

Walking distance: 9 km
