Terramoto and Maremoto

Басылган: 10.01.2017

Earthquake danger is omnipresent here on the Pacific. In the hotel, there were advice notices on what to do in the event of an earthquake (Terramoto) followed by a tsunami (Maremoto). The advice was, like many things, only in Spanish, and waiting for the earthquake to be over was not really helpful....

At least gathering places are designated, and in Iquique, there are pictures everywhere showing where to run during a tsunami (away from the sea and to higher ground, which is clear in theory, but orientation is certainly important in such a situation....

What many may not know is that in Chile on May 22, 1960, there was the strongest earthquake ever recorded, with a magnitude of 9.5 on the Richter scale.
