Bathhouse in the Quadriburgus of Oberranna

Ku kandziyisiwile: 02.05.2024

In the Quadriburgus of Oberranna, they did not want to forgo the amenities of Roman bathing culture. In the basement of the West Tower, there was a small bath consisting of two rooms. The warm bath room (caldarium) and the associated heating system (praefurnium) located outside the tower were largely destroyed during construction work for a road in 1960. It was only in 2017 that the cold bath room (rigidarium) and the cold water bath (piscina) were discovered. The practically fully preserved sitting bath tub is inserted into the wall, demonstrating that the bath was already taken into account during the construction planning. The floor of the cold bath room consists of differently sized bricks. Traces of the later applied floor screed are still preserved, especially in the peripheral areas. The pedestals on the walls served as seating. Even in the piscina and frigidarium, the waterproof Roman wall plaster is still intact. Fingerprints from Roman times are even visible. To ensure the preservation of the wall plaster, the West Tower is covered in winter and heated if necessary.
