#3 The Desert of Canada

Ku kandziyisiwile: 02.09.2022

Before I get to the title of this post, I would like to briefly mention something. After my last post, I received many messages from various groups (family, friends, former colleagues, and students). I just want to quickly (yeah, "quickly" - it's going to be too long again - sorry!) say that I am really doing well here. On the same evening that I wrote the last post, I had a really nice conversation with two people here. I also played a lot of badminton here, where you don't have to speak so much English - it was used as a break for my mind - but it still leads to interaction between people 😊 I have really good conversations here and now the Google Translator + dictionary and my English language skills are having conversations that last over an hour. So everything is fine, but still thank you very much 😊

Now let's finally talk about more current things. I have been here for a week now and I keep experiencing new things. But it is sooooo incredibly hot. Yesterday (01.09.2022) it was 39 degrees. A positive side effect: I was at a lake for the first time. For the people here it is probably normal, but it is soooo beautiful. You simply have a beautiful lake + mountains. Madness. I have never seen mountains before (exception: Brocken) and it is just beautiful to see so many now. But even today it is extremely hot here again and right after this post I will go to the lake. It really feels like a desert. As soon as the sun goes down, it cools down very quickly here. The first nights were around 14 degrees and that is a big difference when it is over 30 degrees during the day and therefore really cold. Next week it is supposed to be only 9 degrees.... Yeah well.... It is also extremely cold early in the morning, but you can see one of the many mountain peaks slowly rise and then from about 7:30 a.m. the sun comes out and it heats up so quickly. Madness! I feel like a walking tomato.... the sun is really intense here. What else is my work here? So my day starts at 6:15 a.m., I drag myself out of my trailer (oh yes, there was a sleeping place upgrade - yeah!) to the coffee machine and then work starts at 7:00 a.m. I do something different every day and can learn so many different things. Yesterday I got my first cut here while weeding - quite an achievement. Otherwise, I am doing well so far. Harvesting kale, zucchini, cucumbers, something I don't know and salads + weeding, those are my tasks so far... oh and dismantling the greenhouse.

What other new animals have I seen? Only a snake and our pets, interestingly, the coyotes seem to come pretty close to the farm. But my sleep is probably very good because I haven't heard them yet.

So far so good, now it's off to the lake.

Talk to you later.
