Crete Day 3: May 6th - Preveli and Plakias

Ku kandziyisiwile: 12.03.2018

On the third day of our trip, we set off from Rethimnon to Preveli. Since Preveli was less than an hour's drive from Rethimnon, we decided not to give up our accommodation in Rethimnon yet and spend another night there.

Preveli

Preveli, with its palm grove, was the location for one of the James Bond movies and thus a popular tourist attraction. So we set off early and headed straight there after breakfast. The road there led us through fascinating gorges. To get to the beach, we had to park the car in the designated parking lot first. Then we had to descend the cliffs for quite a distance. The view was fantastic! However, I already started thinking about the way back...

Upon arriving at the beach, we had to wade through a small river. We found a shady spot under the trees and enjoyed the tranquility. There wasn't much going on yet.

Later, we took a look at the palm grove, which led directly along the river. It felt like being in another world here!

After a few hours, the first excursion boats and tour groups arrived. When it started to get crowded, we packed up and started heading back. A strenuous ascent awaited us. It was quite hot that day, but luckily there was a pleasant breeze that made it more bearable.

Plakias

Upon arriving at the parking lot, we drove towards Plakias. There was also a beautiful, albeit quite rocky, beach. But since we weren't there to swim, it didn't bother us much. It was still nice to look at! The village is quite small and very quiet. We stayed there for a while, had some ice cream, and then headed back.

On the way back, we stopped in one of the wonderful gorges.

Last evening in Rethimnon

Back in Rethimnon, we were quite hungry, so we went on a quest for food in the city. There, in the midst of the cozy old town, we found the restaurant 'Nyn & Aei'. However you may pronounce it, the food there was really good! It was supposed to be the best food we had the chance to try here in Crete. The landlady was also very accommodating and recommended various mezedes (the Cretan version of tapas) to us, which we immediately tried. And all that for a really great price! The two of us paid 15 euros for the complete menu, which also included a drink for each person, which was more than okay! That's where I also discovered my favorite Cretan dish: Suzioukakia (I hope I spelled it correctly :D). It's meatballs in a very tasty and fruity tomato sauce. Sounds very simple, but the tomatoes in Crete have such an intense flavor that they simply can't be compared to our German tomatoes. You should definitely try it!

Satisfied and full, we strolled through the alleys of Rethimnon for a while and found a rock bar where we settled down for a drink. It didn't take very long for us to feel the familiar tiredness and we fell half-dead into bed.

The next morning, it was time to pack our things and continue to Balos.
