We eagerly made our way to Kaikoura, as it is teeming with animals on land and in the water.
We immediately liked Kaikoura from the first moment we arrived. We went straight to the lookout point and admired the surroundings from above. Kaikoura is a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Due to the ocean currents and geographical features, it is home to whales, dolphins, seals, petrels, and albatrosses. The coolest thing, in our opinion, is that there are year-round sperm whales here.
We quickly went in search of New Zealand fur seals and found them along the coast. They were lying on the rocks, basking in the sun. It's so adorable to see them move on land, almost a bit clumsy. But you must never get too close to them, as they can become quite aggressive and show their teeth. Luckily, they were very lazy when we saw them. We probably saw around 200 seals.
On the way back, we stopped at a roadside seafood BBQ and enjoyed some local fish. We made sure to eat everything, even though it was almost too much, so that we would have good luck the next day. Stay tuned to find out why ;) Oh, and it was very delicious!
We slept quite poorly, filled with anticipation for the next day. We had booked a whale watching boat tour. However, the wind was very strong, and the excursion was uncertain. Fortunately, the wind had calmed down overnight, and we were able to start the tour. :D However, the sea was still very rough, and some people on the boat got seasick - luckily not us!
Thank you to everyone who kept their fingers crossed for us! We actually spotted three whales :D!!! Twice a sperm whale and once a humpback whale. We are still so excited and can hardly believe our luck. The wildlife here is truly unique, and we love it.
