After my first work and travel experience was rather a failure, I have now returned to Lüneburg. Now it's time to digest the collected impressions. What have I already learned? To plan less, not to book flights too early, to let things come to me.......and to seize opportunities that arise spontaneously. That's the best way to spend my sabbatical year.
What was so dissatisfying on the Finca on La Palma? In short: we 'work and travellers' didn't get any work. In addition, the bad weather came exactly in the days I was there.....So, the four of us 'work and travellers' were stuck in the fog at low temperatures. In any case, we gained the experience of getting along with each other in the simplest conditions. Thinking of doing laundry, shopping or anything like that was out of the question. The laundry, like the dish towels, didn't dry even after three days. Whether you want to shower in the cold with perpetually wet towels, you think twice about it.
To reach the nearest store, a one-hour hike to the nearest bus stop was necessary, in order to catch the rare bus to the next larger town. In good weather, that wouldn't have been a serious problem either. But walking along muddy slopes in never-ending rain wouldn't always have been safe.
In the end, my solution to take a rental car after 5 days was not only my joy, but also the joy of all the other guests at the Finca who wanted to join every trip.
