Have you ever been high up in the mountains and looked up at the sky, marveling at the stars and struggling to find words to describe what you see? Sometimes, when traveling, you find yourself in that same position, unsure of where to begin amidst all the diversity and beauty. So, I decided to apply the military wisdom I had learned, which goes something like this: take things one step at a time, no matter how unnecessary or time-consuming:
Perth is the city where I met Dimitrij, and it was the starting point of our adventure in Western Australia. We spent a whole five days immersing ourselves in the modern city life of Perth and its surroundings. On Rottnest Island, a small island off the coast of Perth, we were greeted by the curious and adorable Quokkas during our bike tour, despite the wind, rain, and sunshine.
After staying in a dodgy hostel, where we had our valuables stolen on Monday, April 29th, and Dimitrij was robbed of his toiletry bag containing a nail clipper and a beard trimmer, we were even more excited to get our camper van. Besides wondering what kind of thief would be interested in such things, we were fortunate that our cotton swabs weren't stolen as well. Unfortunately, our roommates had more expensive items stolen from them.
Exactly one week ago, our little trip to the south finally began with the Chubby Camper, a small Toyota van with plenty of space, an automatic transmission, and cruise control. Yes, the storage space is truly astonishing. It's so big that we had already reported Dimitrij's wallet as missing for four days when it was spit out by the mesh of the side netting one morning. Our first beach visit was Lucky Bay near Esperance, where we made friends with whole living kangaroos who were clearly more interested in our plastic decorative plant named Jonny than in our petting and photo sessions.
For a whole week now, we have been enjoying our camping life together with Jonny. This includes cooking, washing up, refueling, refilling water, planning, shopping, driving, visiting national parks, enjoying, sunbathing, and various other activities ending in -ing.
Many evenings, I have had the pleasure of marveling at the starry sky in Australia, free from excessive light pollution, and thinking to myself: What a variety, what a beauty!
