In Vancouver, we met a nice couple from Germany, Anna & Jannik. It was great we could meet again in Squamish and spend two days together. First, we went sport climbing in Murrin Park, a good crag around a lake. It’s a totally different kind of granite than in the other areas in Squamish we’ve been to. It’s rather “normal” face climbing on well-structured rock, less cracks and flakes in otherwise smooth granite. The best route was the The Burglar 5.10d, which we were happy to on-sight. It starts with an overhang with big jugs and ends with a bouldery, technical traverse. Afterwards, we enjoyed a swim in Browning Lake.
The next day, we climbed the short multi-pitch Star Chek 5.9 in Cheakamus Canyon. Climbing-wise, it’s pretty easy and rather underwhelming, but the setting is terrific! You go up an exposed arête, directly above the canyon and the roaring river. Luckily, we met some people at the parking lot who had a spare climbing harness and I brought my old climbing shoes, so we could climb altogether at once (because Anna & Jannik only rented gear for one person). We checked out the waters of Alice Lake later. In the evening, we treated ourselves with a deluxe dinner our two camping stoves could just about handle - wraps with a large amount of vegetables including the hugest eggplant I’ve ever seen. As our ways parted the morning after, we wished each other a good trip. These 2 days were really fun, so we’ll probably see each other again in Germany.
