We actually didn't want to go to Koh Phi Phi because it's extremely crowded with tourists. But after being recommended multiple times, we decided to take a tour to the famous Maya Bay - the beach from "The Beach" with Leonardo di Caprio.
To escape the tourist crowds, we opted for a tour just before sunset. After booking the tour, we took the ferry from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi the next morning (or as Paddy always says, Koh Pfiffi). The journey took about 2 hours.
Upon arrival at Koh Phi Phi, we were greeted by thousands of signs - everyone wanted to sell us something. After fighting our way through hundreds of souvenir shops, we escaped into the first restaurant and enjoyed the view from the beach. The water was turquoise blue and very clear. Along with the rocks in the background, we had the perfect panorama.
After eating, our tour started. At the first stop, we snorkeled at a reef. We had never seen so many colorful fish and sea urchins before.
Then we drove to the beach of Maya Bay. It was about an hour before sunset. From a distance, we could already see countless boats unloading and loading masses of tourists. The bay is surrounded by huge cliffs, the beach is very fine and white. The water is incredibly clear. We even saw a small reef shark.
We watched the sunset from the boat. Then we had a delicious Thai dinner on board.
When it got dark, we went snorkeling again. It was quite strange to jump into dark water. Who knows how many sharks are around ๐ At night, with slight movement in the water, you could see the plankton glowing. It looked like an underwater fireworks display.
Then we returned to the harbor under moonlight.
The next morning, we climbed a mountain from which we had a beautiful view over Koh Pfiffi. We got up early (7 AM) so that it wouldn't be too hot yet. But we were still totally exhausted when we finally reached the top. We looked like we had just come out of the sauna. ๐
From above, we saw how "built up" the island already is and how many more hotels are being built. We found a photo from the year 2000 on the internet. The difference is quite shocking.
We were glad to be back in Krabi.
