Córdoba

Nai-publish: 18.12.2023

The city is also of Moorish origin, which can still be clearly seen in the Juderia district, and the small, very tranquil inner courtyards are also of Moorish character.

In May there is a competition for the inner courtyards in Cordoba, the most beautiful ensemble of furniture, plants and atmosphere is awarded. During this time, visitors have access to the small inner courtyards, most of which were unfortunately closed to us. Overall, there are often planted pots hanging on the outside of the facades, which almost became my downfall today because an eager gardener almost watered me too...

We found Cordoba to be quieter and nicer than Granada, it was more relaxed and not as busy, apart from the main attraction.

The former Mosque Mezquita has now been completely taken over by the Catholic Church, and here they insist on calling it a cathedral, which in my opinion doesn't really fit.

We had booked a ticket for a specific time, but compared to the Alhambra that wouldn't have been necessary. It was still manageable, although there were already a few groups out and about, but overall it was within limits.

I have to admit that I really like Moorish, I was really impressed by the art of the characters in the Alhambra, the Mezquita is even older. We have already been to the Alabaster Mosque in Egypt, this is the European-Moorish version, but no less beautiful or interesting!

What the travel guide didn't quite prepare me for was the Catholic monstrosity that was installed in the mosque after Cordoba was recaptured. It's simply a major break in style. Where the mosque is so wonderfully open and flooded with light thanks to the columns and porticos, the closed part of the church simply doesn't fit at all. I was a little disappointed.

The mosque is no longer in operation today, but at least communal living continued to function for a few centuries. The church is of course, entirely Catholic, still in use...

The city itself has a Roman bridge and a few other attractions such as museums and the like, it is really beautiful overall and the mountains around it are wonderful.

Today we were able to take a little walk around the campsite, which is of course a little paradise for us, especially because there is a FOREST here!
