The Chilcotin River...

Nai-publish: 15.09.2023

...was the highlight of the otherwise long and monotonous drive from Nimpo Lake to Williams Lake.

Half-height trees and endless pastures that are now yellow with lots of cattle, some of which also run on the highway. Signs warn “Watch for Livestock”, but right behind them there is “max 90km/h”....

Well, the brakes are probably the be-all and end-all on the truck anyway. After all, we are still at altitude and the “Chilcotin-Bella Coola Hwy” goes up and down.

On the route we also saw huge charred stands of trees, the consequences of forest fires (current and in recent years), completely depressing.

But as bad as they are, the fires have always started the old-to-new cycle, a local told us.

We divided the route in two and stayed overnight at the “Bulls Canyon Campground” right on the river in question - incredibly clear starry sky on the rushing river! Sooo romantic.... (original sound Jens).

Apart from the view into the canyon near Hanceville, the second part of the route wasn't any more exciting. Only at the bridge over the Fraser River did the landscape become more mountainous, greener and more beautiful.

And: the temperature went from 4 degrees this morning to 29 degrees at noon. It may be that the North German onion look was invented in BC after all....
