The naive euphoria turns into uncertainty and mistrust when we arrive late at San José airport.
Mistrust towards the sleazy guy who is inconspicuously staring at us, mistrust towards taxi drivers who gather around us like ants, mistrust towards the early nightfall.
Since the airport, unlike our hostel, is not located in San José itself, but in Alajuela, about forty minutes away, we call one of the taxis. With my limited Spanish, I squeeze information about the country and its people out of our driver and have to realize that the talkative and friendly Tico is the perfect guide. The mood lightens.
Apart from being fooled in an electronics shop, nothing worth mentioning happened in the chaotic San José in two days. We didn't particularly like the big city, which is why our anticipation for Puerto Viejo de Talamanca was even greater.
Conclusion:
We didn't warm up to San José.
