Everything is going smoothly and easily so far, are we still in South America? No, that's because the travel agency has organized everything very well. However, it is advantageous to speak the local language, for example when picking up the car. With two big SUVs, the adventure can begin on your own. And the significantly more comfortable part begins: finally reliably clean towels, always a private bathroom, stylish decor, and usually a very good breakfast. Plus amenities like independence and air conditioning.
The first few days we spent in Puerto Varas, a beautiful town on Lake Llanquihue and surrounded by 2 magnificent volcanoes. Lots of German-influenced wooden architecture and a nice wooden church make up the place. We did some nice hiking in the area, with spectacular landscapes that are sometimes similar to the Alps. But there are no volcanoes here.
We have successfully passed the first gravel road challenge, or rather our cars have. At the beginning, the Carretera Austral is still paved, but then it's not. In the end, we arrived safely in Hornopirén.
