Good to know - Buenos Aires

1. The most touristy neighborhoods are Palermo, Microcentro, San Telmo, Puerto Madero, and Recoleta. Palermo and Puerto Madero are the safest at night. Neighborhoods like La Boca, Barracas, Constitución, and everything south of Palermo should be avoided at night, especially alone, and if necessary, visited by taxi.

2. Buenos Aires has a very well-developed subway network. However, if the destination is a bit off the beaten path, there is definitely a bus that goes there.

3. Bus stops are sometimes difficult to find or can only be identified by an existing queue. No one really knows when the buses come, but you can be sure that one will come.

4. Unlike in Chile, 'Colectivos' do not denote taxis but buses.

5. You need a charged SUBE card for buses, trains, and subways. However, it can be shared among several people. It can be obtained at the kiosks or train stations.

6. On the street, you should keep your mobile phone in your pocket. I have also been approached by several strangers who advised me to do that.

7. There are musicians and singers on almost every subway and train ride. Equally common are vendors of items such as creams, highlighters, jewelry, or candies. They place their goods on each passenger's lap and collect them again if you do not give them a sign that you would like to buy it.

8. When walking through the streets of Buenos Aires, you will sooner or later notice that water drips onto the sidewalks from above almost everywhere. This is condensation water from air conditioners installed on the outside of the building.

9. Very orderly queues are formed at bus stops. There is no cutting in line here.

10. Argentina is relatively expensive compared to other South American countries. Although it is cheaper than Chile or Uruguay, you will often notice the similarity to German prices. Fresh fruit and vegetables, museum tickets, and all public transport are considered cheap for Europeans.

11. Addresses are given by naming the streets of the nearest intersection because the streets are so long. (Useful for taxi rides)
