First of all, let me say this: According to Hermann, if you want to explore the wine region of Stellenbosch by mountain bike, you should be a professional athlete 😁
For everyone else - like us - it's important to have a good breakfast, show some determination, and not take too much of the very tempting wine samples. We are so glad that we decided against the rather old bicycles of our Airbnb and instead rented professional bikes this morning. Definitely the right decision! Because once you've made it up the mountain, you can go down at about ten times the speed. Functioning brakes definitely came in handy ☺
After the sweaty ride to our destination winery, the selection tasted even better. Today we chose the very small and family-owned winery 'Vriesenhof'. They employ about 20 people here. One of them guided us through our wine tasting session where we could try 6 wines (2 white, 4 red). Even for non-typical wine drinkers like us, it was a lot of fun. This was mainly due to the warm care and nice conversations during the tasting. Today, with the fantastic weather, we were able to taste the selected wines on the winery's own terrace with a view of the mountains.
We would have liked to visit another, larger winery for comparison after Vriesenhof. However, we were unsure if we had enough time for that. In retrospect, it's a good thing we decided against it. Because at exactly 5 p.m., we were back at the bike rental place, just as we had arranged.
If possible, tomorrow we will visit another larger winery with an adjacent restaurant by car. Two German girls we met during our waterfall hike in Storms River recommended the Springbok fillet from the restaurant at Delheim Winery. Maybe that will be our lunch tomorrow... After all, our flight is not until 11 p.m. We will see!
Fun fact: We live here on a side street of the so-called 'Van der Stel Road'. Work follows us everywhere 😆
