First step to becoming a surf pro

Çap edildi: 29.07.2019

Hello and welcome to my third blog entry.

I spent the last 2 days in a surf hostel and the typical stereotype of an Australian surf boy is not a stereotype, they really do look like what you imagine :D

In the evening, we always sat together and talked, and I realized once again how small the world is. One of the guys is originally from Australia, has been living in Taiwan for 7 years now, and worked as a bartender in Herrengasse in Wr. Neustadt about 10 years ago - coincidences happen.

Since my landlady (Nia) is also a surf instructor, I decided to take a few lessons right away. Together with another Austrian (they are really everywhere), we went to Dreamland Beach and started. The conditions were not exactly beginner-friendly with waves of about 2-3 meters high, so my first surfing attempts mainly consisted of learning how to dive under high waves and paddling a loooot. I never thought surfing could be so exhausting. In the end, I got the hang of it quite well and 'rode' some waves. It's definitely a lot of fun and I will definitely continue doing it during my time here in Bali.

Of course, I forgot the sunscreen in the hotel, so now I am the proud owner of a massive sunburn on the back of my thighs and on my face. But hey, at least I have a free seat heater when riding a scooter :D

In the evening, Nia convinced me to go out with her friends and a German hotel guest. Since we were out with the locals, we pre-gamed in front of a supermarket in a typical way and then went to the Single Fin Beach Club, which is located directly on a cliff by the sea. Really cool location and the Balinese really know how to party. Going drinking and then driving home yourself? In Austria (almost) unthinkable, in Bali totally normal. There are no regulations regarding this here, so after such a party, nobody is sober on the street.

Today I made my way to the east of Bali. I explored the area a bit and spent time on the beach. Tomorrow my diving course starts - I'm excited!

Sincerely,
Martin
