After almost 18 hours, we have arrived in Guatemala, more specifically in Antigua. The flights were great: we had very few turbulence. So a real difference to South America (some may remember our stories). Antigua was the capital of Central America (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) until the 18th century. So a real metropolis of that time. Antigua was largely destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1773 and only partially rebuilt, losing its status as the capital. That explains the colonial atmosphere. The colorful houses are arranged in square streets and have beautiful courtyards. The streets themselves are all paved with cobblestones, which are not just 500 years old. All in all, a beautiful, tranquil town. As in all of Central and South America, celebrations are also enjoyed here and we experienced a procession with a street festival. Tomorrow we will continue to Panajachel.
