Wicklow way

Our Planning

We wanted to walk the trail as unrestricted and above all easy as possible. Tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, etc. stayed at home. There are options for outdoor accommodation. However, it is important to note that these are strictly forbidden on private property - at least according to the signs. There are shopping facilities at the start at Marlay Park. On our stages, supplies could only be replenished in the villages at the end of the day!

On a long weekend in October 2016, we finally set off...

The Trail

The Wicklow Way near Dublin is one of the most famous long-distance hiking trails (alongside the Kerry Way, for example) and is consistently well signposted. The 127 km long tour starts on the southern edge of the city.

The landscape on our stages was extremely diverse. Hilly passages, narrow paths, forest trails or rooted paths alternated with regularity. This was often accompanied by breathtaking views into the distance - at the beginning even towards the sea.

During our hiking tour, we stayed in pre-booked accommodations. Here we got to know the hospitality of the Irish.

Coolakay House (Stage 1 from Marlay Park to Enniskerry: approx. 24 km)

The Coach House (Stage 2 from Enniskerry to Roundwood: approx. 22 km) - unfortunately we were moved out here - where exactly ... no idea

Conclusion:

With the multitude of hiking trails, it is impossible to say "This is the best one". However, the Wicklow Way is definitely at the top of the list. If our time allows, we will walk it until the end. No - not if, we will...
