From our freedom camping site, we can already admire our destination for the day: the Franz Josef Glacier.

We want to hike the Roberts Point Track, which promises to offer a 'close-up' view of the glacier. It is the most adventurous track we have undertaken so far. The trail leads over suspension bridges, waterfalls, scree, and stairs between rocks and cliffs. After 2.5 hours, we reach our destination. The viewpoint is located at 605 meters above sea level and approximately 2 km from the glacier. We enjoy our lunch and observe the helicopters as they drop off and pick up their guests directly at the glacier. It is somewhat sad to see that the glacier continues to retreat and will probably cease to exist in a few years.

In the afternoon, we continue driving north to the small village of Ross and treat ourselves to a hot shower at a campground. We spend the evening in a relaxed atmosphere with our 'neighbors', Jannik from the Czech Republic and Ben from Australia. The two are traveling through NZ only by bicycle and have quite a few stories to tell.
