Pilion

After the Meteora Monasteries, we longed for the sea again. We drove across Greece and ended up on the other side, on the east coast of the mainland, on the Pilion Peninsula.

As our first destination, we chose Kato Gatzea, a charming beach town. We stayed high above the sea on the edge of the bay. There was a small beach below and from there we could reach the lovely village with some cafes, taverns, and a small harbor. We enjoyed our time here and were surprised by two thunderstorms in the evenings.

Then we continued all the way to the southernmost point of Pilion. Through winding roads and almost jungle-like terrain, we first arrived at a wild bay (recommended by Waltraud in the motorhome guide) with a small church. We then reached an absolute highlight, the little village of Katigiorgis! A beautiful bay with a beach and good tavernas.

We enjoyed two nights at Camping Kastri, right on a secluded beach. Well, actually not so secluded, as this area seems to be a hotspot for Austrians. And the campsite is run by Germans, so it's clear which language dominates. But in general, there are few people everywhere and we can always find very nice spots to park.

We drove another 1000 curves to the southern tip of Pilion, to the picturesque pirate village of Agia Kyriaki. However, we stayed on the more sheltered side in Milina. Here, due to the islands in front, the sea looks more like a lake. For the first time, we were able to enjoy delicious fresh fish here, unfortunately not caught by ourselves.

The curves finally took their revenge on the last leg of Pilion in the form of the boys' backwards breakfasts... Luckily, there are washing machines everywhere. Speaking of appliances: for over a week now, we have been living without a fridge, as our fridge has finally given up despite repair attempts and good persuasion. But we're managing well, and in Thessaloniki, we should find a solution, as there is a motorhome garage there.
