Day 20: Delfzijl - Oudeschip (20.5 km)

ప్రచురించబడింది: 04.07.2023

Woke up around 7 o'clock, washed, dressed, etc. and at 8:30 am breakfast was ready for us, and what a breakfast! All kinds of homemade jams, a boiled and a fried egg with herbs, cheese, cold cuts, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers from the garden, various types of bread, fruits, peanut butter, sprinkles, and a few other things that I definitely forgot to mention.

During breakfast, we had a lovely chat with Ineke. After packing our belongings and writing in the guestbook, it was time to say goodbye to these warm-hearted people.

Today's hike starts with 2 kilometers through the city and then continues along the dike to Oudeschip/Eemshaven.

We have changeable weather today. We see a lot of sun, but there are also occasional rain showers, so we have to seek shelter a few times, for example, in a bunker or a shelter at a pumping station. That's why we have to put on our rain jackets again and again. Strong gusts of wind sweep across the land. We walk the entire way without stopping. 😲

When we arrive at the address where we will be staying tonight, there is nobody there, but all the doors are open and the two dogs greet us friendly. Via WhatsApp, we receive a message that the lady of the house is at work, but we can stay there if we want to.

I check on Google Maps how far it is to the harbor and I'm quite shocked when I see that it's 8.5 km to get to the ferry. Pfff, way too far to walk there now... What now? I seriously underestimated that! And the train that runs from the neighboring village is also 5.6 km away from here.

We are a bit shocked...

Then the master of the house comes home. A friendly 69-year-old man who has a solution for all our "problems". We can borrow the bicycles if we need to go to the ferry tomorrow, and if we go by train, he will give us a ride... great! Life is sunny again. After seeing our room, we take a stroll through the mini village.

When we get back, we have a beer in the garden and play Rummikub until dinner is ready because we were invited. Jan has cooked a delicious meal for us. We enjoy the food and the company. Alda discovers that there are Ural owls in the garden and she is very excited! Who knows, maybe we'll see them tomorrow, but for now, we finish the game of Rummikub (Alda wins again!) and lie down.

See you tomorrow!
