Arrived at 00:26 am, I had to go straight to the Westjet airline counter, my second time flying with them, and drop off my missing backpack.
The Edmonton airport is very small compared to Toronto. All the employees are very helpful and friendly.
After that, I logged into the Wi-Fi network to see if my Couchsurfing host left me a message.
I was supposed to contact him when I landed so he could come pick me up.
Having done that, it was time to wait. One hour had already passed, during that time I contacted him a few times on the Couchsurfing app, but unfortunately, I didn't receive any messages.
Great, I thought, my backpack is missing, it's the middle of the night, and he's not responding. He's probably sleeping and didn't hear his alarm.
Well, think positive, so I went back inside the airport instead of waiting outside because it was getting cold.
Then a security guy approached me. He asked if he could help me. I just wanted to know if I could spend the night at the airport since I wasn't picked up, etc.
He offered me his help and asked where I was going. I looked up the address and showed it to him. He offered to drive me there if I trusted him. He was done with work and didn't live far away.
I agreed. I sent a message to my host and told him that I found someone who would take me to him.
Now many people might think, oh no, Anja, are you crazy, a stranger and you're letting him drive you to an address, and you probably won't arrive, but I listened to my gut feeling and judgment of people.
We got in the car and drove off.
He was very glad to be able to help me. He wanted to know where I knew him from, where we were going, if he's a close friend.
I thought to myself, if I tell him that I don't know the guy at all, and explain what Couchsurfing is, he won't take me there, so I told him that I know him a little bit but he's not a close friend, but he shouldn't worry.
We arrived, and my Couchsurfing host was already at the door and told me that the app didn't work and he only received the messages around 2 am.
I thanked the security guy (unfortunately, I forgot his name) and said goodbye.
The name of the place where I stayed is Parnell.
He showed me the house and my room where I will be sleeping for the next few nights and said goodnight because it was already 2:30 am and his alarm would go off at 6 am.
Next day!
It's already 8 am and I'm awake. I should get up then. He showed me last night where the coffee machine and the coffee are. So I went straight to the kitchen.
So far so good, but how does this all work?! I feel as if I've never made coffee before. Where are the filters?
Well, they probably don't use filters.
The coffee still tasted good :)
To my surprise, Parnell came home around 11 am. I asked him immediately how they make coffee here.
Good to know, the filters look different here, and I thought they were cupcake molds :)
