On the last day of our four-river tour, the weather gods were not kind to us. We actually wanted to go to Trier, but the rain would have spoiled our visit to this ancient city too much. So our guide Jupp had worked out two alternatives: 1. 20 kilometers by bike to Mettlach. 2. By train to Mettlach. Why Mettlach? Easy question: There is a Villeroy & Boch outlet center there. If necessary, our ladies would have walked to Mettlach - constant rain or no rain. But a third alternative presented itself: take advantage of a break in the rain and take another jaunt to beautiful Saarburg.
A handful of indefatigable cyclists braved the water and hopped on their bikes. A handful of indefatigable pleasure seekers treated themselves to a final ride through Saarburg, including a long coffee in one of the charming cafés. But the majority were our indefatigable shopping freaks, who took the train to Mettlach, relaxed and made their way through the outlet center, and brought home a few bargains as trophies.
This is the end of our trip. It is not my place to draw a general conclusion. For Icke and me, these were very impressive days in which we were able to get to know a region of Germany that amazed us with its landscape, the rolling hills along the rivers Ahr, Mosel, Lahn and Saar, the abundance of greenery, the forests and vineyards, the many small towns with their great history, their glorious castles and magical palaces, their charm and their natural, authentic flair. This is Germany? Can our country be so beautiful? We were not prepared for this. It makes us want more.
We were once again surprised by the enthusiasm, energy and joy of life with which the friends of the European Motorhome Club approached each of these 19 days - regardless of whether it was sunny or raining. It was a varied program with attractive campsites and many interesting excursions. When you consider that the planners and organizers, including Irmi and Ricci, Heinz and Heidi, and Jupp and Rita, put this tour together voluntarily in their free time, the thanks cannot be great enough. The same goes for Gerd and Ute, who served up four great meals for the whole team. This commitment is testament to the spirit that prevails in this club, where community comes first. One for all, all for one - the three musketeers would have been delighted with the European Motorhome Friends.
A very special compliment also goes to our photographer Marianne and her assistant Hans, without whose tireless efforts this blog would not have been possible. Thank you very much for the beautiful photos!
