In the morning, we loaded all our stuff back into the car and headed to our first stop: Torquay.
Torquay is mainly known for its surfers. That's why we made our first stop at the surfer beach 'Bells Beach'. The famous Easter Surfing Classic surfing competition takes place at this beach. The surfing conditions here are said to be almost perfect. Therefore, we were able to watch many surfers of all ages and marvel at the big waves. Then we continued to a lookout called Point Addis Broudway. Wooden stairs, blue water, and the light brown to almost golden beach fascinated us every time. Thanks to the beautiful view, we quickly got into conversation with other astonished tourists. A couple showed us a lizard that sat at the roadside.
On the way to Anglesea, we stopped at a golf course on Noble Street. This one is particularly known for its 'animal lawnmowers'. Kangaroos are grazing everywhere and keeping the lawn nice and short. We had barely stopped, and we were already in a large herd of kangaroos. We were able to observe kangaroos in their mothers' pouches as well. For me, it was the first time I had seen kangaroos, and in the wild and so close! Fascinating! It was amazing. But you still have a little respect for them. Back in the car, we continued to Point Roadknight. Anglesea is particularly known for its long beaches. We took a lunch break there and watched the crowds of people.
After lunch, we drove to Aireys Inlet. We visited the Split Point Lighthouse and took a break at a tea house. Ben showed us how to eat traditional scones there.
Continuing along the Great Ocean Road, we finally got what we had been longing for for a long time. We thought we had missed it long ago... THE Great Ocean Road sign. We immediately pulled over to the left, and we started a photo shoot. We took pictures together, individual pictures, and jumping photos from different perspectives to achieve the perfect photo. When we were relatively satisfied and Ben just wanted to continue, we went to Erskine Falls, which are 9.5 km north of Lorne. The waterfall is really worth seeing. We felt like we were in the jungle! The round trip was a total adventure. Our Fiat Compact is quite small (compact indeed) and packed full with our luggage. We were a little afraid of driving down the mountains and especially driving up again. But our car made it too, albeit at a very slow pace. We were very proud and then went to Teddy's Lookout. Since the observation platform is quite high, we could see very far. The Great Ocean Road is very winding and runs along the mountainside, which is why you are always amazed while driving. Seeing this from the platform was also really unique. When we got back to the car, we saw a little koala. It was enjoying its dinner on a eucalyptus tree. It was the first time I had seen a koala and once again in the wild. Very nice!
Afterwards, we drove for a good hour on the Great Ocean Road to Apollo Bay. You can't help but stop at the roadside over and over again and enjoy the view. The light blue-turquoise water, golden cliffs, and green mountains offer a beautiful view that we will hopefully not forget so quickly. In the evening, we arrived at our destination where we had booked a hostel the day before. The hostel offers us everything we need. It's not as nice as our last accommodation (it doesn't have any dogs either), but we're only staying here for one day.
The next day, we will continue towards Warrnambool.
