The Nullarbor Plain

The Nullarbor Plain is a treeless steppe landscape and a popular route for road trips as the road passes through some beautiful viewpoints. The Eyre Highway starts in the town of Ceduna and runs 1300km to the larger town of Norseman. Along the route, there are several roadhouses, which include a petrol station, a small restaurant, and usually a paid camping site. However, there are no supermarkets to buy food from. Therefore, we had to stock up on food and drinking water for 3-4 days in Ceduna. We bought three containers, each with 15 liters. Of course, you also have to account for water for cooking, washing the dishes, brushing your teeth, and showering. Another special feature of this route is crossing the border from South Australia to Western Australia after about 500km. Here too, fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and honey are not allowed to be brought along. Violating this law carries a fine of AUD 8,000 (approximately EUR 5,000). When we start driving, we see policemen and their cars with flashing lights coming towards us and feel very uncertain. Did we understand everything correctly? Is the border control really only in 500km? Turning back doesn't make sense, so before we get chased like in a movie and it all ends in an unpleasant shootout, we prefer to put all our potatoes and bananas on the table right away. The officer greets us friendly and asks Moritz for a breath test. That's it😅 we were very relieved and continued the road trip.
