#56 Vulkan National Park in the southeast

January 20, 2022: Isleta del Moro, El Cabo de Gata

J. We have now arrived in the southeastern corner of Spain. The first region in the province of Andalusia is Almeria and various people had recommended the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park to us. The coast there is rugged. It is made up of sharp-edged rocks, steep cliffs, and small coves with sandy beaches. The whole region is volcanic, which leads to some oddly shaped conical mountains. But there are also chalk cliffs, so the ground is sometimes white, sometimes red, and sometimes dark brown. We visited the tiny village of Isleta del Moro, a coastal town with white houses, and hiked through the unique landscape from the slightly larger town of San José, which apparently is a party town in the summer.

In the evening, we visited the salt pans located in the southern part of the nature park, next to which enormous salt mountains are located and where many birds, including a few flamingos, can be seen.
