The first stop in Guatemala is Flores in the north. The ideal starting point for tours to the ruins of Tikal. The city is located on a small island in Lake Petén Itzá. My hostel was on the opposite side and had a beautiful view of the town.
Because of this beautiful location and the quiet atmosphere, I stayed there for a whole week to relax.
But the main reason to come to Flores and stay there is still the incredibly impressive ruins of Tikal, in the middle of the jungle, an hour away.
Spread over a huge area, you can find countless temples and pyramids, many of them completely overgrown by the jungle. And not only that, with a bit of luck you can also discover countless animals. Unfortunately, the jaguar was not among them. But many other larger and smaller ones, as the pictures show.
Despite all the ruins I have already seen, I liked Tikal so much that I went there a second time 😊
It is probably also the last of the Mayan ruins that I visit. There are still smaller ones in southern Guatemala and El Salvador, but Tikal will not be surpassed...
