Lima - Second half

Publicerad: 10.06.2017

A few days ago, my mother arrived from Germany. For this reason, I spent additional days in Lima. Once again, everything went smoothly with Airbnb, as we stayed with a very nice family. The location of the apartment was very central, so we could easily take the 'Metropolitano' - a new bus network - to the city without getting caught in the crazy traffic. Since Lima was the center of the Spanish colonial empire for a long time, the cityscape is characterized by colonial style. Everywhere you can see extensive monastery complexes, magnificent churches, and splendid palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries. Around 1940, thousands of people flocked from the countryside to the city, which promised work and prosperity. For this reason, a huge number of houses were built, which now make the cityscape unattractive. From Plaza San Martin, we had a good starting point for a city stroll. Through the first pedestrian zone in the city and one of the main shopping streets in Lima, called 'Jirón de la Unión', we reached Plaza Mayor - also known as Plaza de Armas. Continuing on this path, we visited three of the many magnificent churches in Lima. The next day, I went back to Miraflores, the nearby modern center of the city. Here you can see luxury hotels and apartment buildings, as well as gardens. This district is located right by the sea and, unlike Peru, and especially Lima, it feels like an illusion. Here, tourists are presented with a surreal world. Because in Peru, 'wealth' only applies to this small district.
Best regards
