After grabbing our breakfast at Tim Hortons again, we headed to Maligne Lake. On the way, we passed by Medicine Lake, where we were shocked by the rows of dead trees. After some research, it was apparently a type of bark beetle that had spread rapidly.
At Maligne Lake, we took a 3-4 km hike, the 'Mary Schäffer Loop' around the lake and through the forest. We watched boats on the lake and threw stones. Later in the forest, we observed birds, which were likely Canada jays. They came quite close to us, chirping away and following us along the path for a while. How sweet :-)
On the way back from the lake, we encountered a small traffic jam on the road. There was a black bear by the roadside. And that in broad daylight. Wow and respect!
We made another stop at Maligne Canyon and walked from the parking lot along the canyon with its bridges to the 5th bridge, about 2 km away. It was impressive how the water rushed down the river. After a picnic at the parking lot of the 5th bridge, we decided to take the slightly shorter 100m path back through the forest. I was a bit scared, as there were few people on this path and we also saw fresh droppings. It was hard to tell if they were from a bear or an elk. But we didn't see any:-)
