#27 Yeppoon

Our fifth and probably last housesitter job in Yeppoon was once again very relaxing. The tasks were clear: entertaining and walking a cute little puppy, as well as feeding a cat. So not much work as usual, and we could of course set our own working hours.

When we weren't playing with the little Mitzi in the house, we relaxed at the public free lagoon located by the sea.

The lagoon was established by the state or the municipality because swimming in the sea is not advantageous. There could be painful or even deadly jellyfish in the sea. In the worst case, however, you might encounter a crocodile while swimming, and that is 100 percent deadly!

We have known this since we visited the Koorana Crocodile Farm. We visited it on 24.03.2019. There, we were shown the strength of their bites and also how fast a crocodile can run if it wants to.

On site, after a few introductory words, we first watched a film about the farm. So we learned that there are 6000 crocodiles on this farm and that they mainly serve as leather and meat suppliers. It doesn't sound great at first, but the existence of the farm at least curbs the black market. And no wild crocodiles are caught and put in cages, as would be the case in a zoo, for example.

After the film, the farm owner showed us 2 freshly hatched crocs (5 minutes old). We could take a close look at the cute ones.

Then he took us and a bucket of chicken parts around the farm to feed the crocs. The farmer had an eye for where the crocs were under the water surface. He threw the meat directly towards the crocodile or held it over the fence so that they almost snapped it out of his hand.

The sound when a crocodile snaps is really terrifying.

One of the largest specimens was over 5 meters long and weighed 800 kilos.

After he showed us a few alligators, we were also allowed to hold a small croc that was about 80 cm long, but its mouth was glued shut for our protection.

So we can now cross saltwater crocodiles and alligators off our list of animals we wanted to see in Australia.
