To find out why the engine was so heavily oiled, I cleaned it and then took a 70km test drive. Although I suspected a motor damage, I still had a small hope that only one or two seals were broken...
The result was shocking: The engine leaked oil from every crack... Especially at the dipstick opening, it was coming out as a small but steady stream at half throttle... What a mess, I can't understand how the previous owner could drive like that... He must have marked his territory everywhere...
Well, it seems like the engine was beyond repair. There was a half-broken one at the scrapyard and a friend of mine had some engines in parts. But to forge a complete one from them, I would have had to wait until one week before the planned departure - not a good idea...
So I bought an engine with transmission on Ebay-Kleinanzeigen in Annaberg-Buchholz... Both were supposedly okay, the engine was demonstrated upon pickup, sounded good... The transmission was thrown in as a freebie, the seller said it should be fine too. I didn't really want it since I already had one. But since there was no price reduction, I took it along because I didn't have the nerve to dismantle it on site...
Well, then I refurbished this engine and immediately installed the transmission, as the previously installed long-geared transmission would be both quite valuable and useless for mountain drives in the Caucasus with low horsepower.
Then the obligatory test drive was carried out with the new engine and the new transmission and behold, the engine still made a really good impression... But with every push of the throttle, the second gear kept popping out of the transmission... Okay, the transmission was a freebie. But the seller should have told me, since he removed the motor with transmission from his own T3, which he drives himself, because of engine performance enhancement and must have known about the transmission damage... Jerk...
So I removed the transmission again in a night shift and installed the transmission with unknown condition, which I collected from the scrapyard.
And look, now everything runs very smoothly...
A big thanks goes especially to Kay and Max from Dresdenbulli e.V.. Thanks to you, the replacement was uncomplicated, now I feel well-equipped for the drive...
