12/11/2017 - Sunday walk

There is no 'real' Sunday in New Zealand, at least it doesn't feel like it. While in Germany the shops are closed on Sundays, New Zealanders consider shopping on these days as a matter of course. We have already seen supermarkets that are open from 07:00 to midnight seven days a week. Since we ran out of water, we took the opportunity to take a closer look at the hustle and bustle. ;)

After stocking up on drinks, we made our way to the beach. After a walk of about 30 minutes, we reached St. Heliers Bay. The promenade was crowded. Many families with children took advantage of the beautiful weather for a beach outing. Only a few athletes dared to venture into the cold water in wetsuits.
Our first destination today was Achilles Point at the eastern end of St. Heliers. From here you have a beautiful view of the sea and the surrounding islands. After taking a few souvenir photos, we walked back the same way.
As it should be - we got hungry. ;) At our trusted bakery, we got ourselves a lunch snack. Finding a suitable spot on the beach, we enjoyed the sun, ate our treats, and watched the activity on the beach. Boats were being loaded and unloaded, dogs were jumping into the sea, and children were playing in the sand.
For dessert, we treated ourselves to something special - oven-warm apple cinnamon scones.
After this little refreshment, we continued our walk. As we walked along the coast, we discovered two impressive trees on the opposite side of the street. You can't imagine how big and mighty these trees were. Their 'branches', each of them could have been a separate tree trunk, reached out in all directions. The trunks and roots were twice as wide as a person and already breaking up the pavement. You have to know - in New Zealand, nature always has the right of way. ;) From an information board, we learned that these trees were planted in 1923. What have they already experienced and survived? - Truly impressive. We are already curious about what other natural beauties are waiting for us once we leave the city behind.
Still completely overwhelmed, we continue our Sunday walk. The coastal path led us to the nearby beach of Kohimarama. When we arrived, a sailing school was coming out of the water at that moment. About 20 children are learning how to handle a sailing boat here. It was funny to see one small boat after the other being pulled out of the water and onto the land.
After feeding some bread from the previous day, we made our way home and enjoyed the rest of the Sunday in a cozy way.
