Although the name may seem like it, this is not an official cathedral. The 'Cathedral de Sal' is a Catholic church in a salt mine, therefore an underground church.
It is full of artworks, most of which are made of salt. Salt stone is also present in the floor, walls, and ceiling.
The cathedral was built so that the workers could pray and ask for protection before starting their work. The history of the mine goes back to the time of colonization, when the locals used the saltwater that came from the mountain to extract salt. The actual mining began when the Spaniards conquered the land.
Not only the cathedral but also the city itself offer a lot to see and a lot of history.
