Back to the east coast to Kaikoura. Now over the Lewis Pass, the northernmost opportunity to cross the Southern Alps (about 330 km). The landscape was moderately exciting, but with many curves again.
The effects of the severe earthquake in Kaikoura 1.5 years ago are still noticeable. Especially the coastal highway was heavily destroyed and efforts are being made to repair it. The effects can also be felt in the town with a few gaps caused by construction.
All of this makes me feel uneasy. Our host (we are staying in the beautiful and modern B&B 'In the Bay') fervently assures us that her house is 'safe'. So think positive, look forward to tomorrow's planned encounter with dolphins and whales, and have an extra glass of wine if in doubt....
