The most impressive thing about Stift Marienfliess is the tranquility. It emanates from the monastery church, from the mighty trees surrounding it, from the shady meadow in front of it. It settles like a delicate veil between the former monastery with its park and the rest of the noisy, fast world, leaving time on the outside.🌳
The monastery church Marienfließ behind it once belonged to the oldest Cistercian monastery in Brandenburg, which was founded in 1230 by the knight and nobleman Johann Gans zu Putlitz. The church, built in the 13th century, outlasted the monastery complex, which was looted and destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
The church exudes tranquility and lightness. An unusually gentle organ sound entices you into the church. The sign on the entrance door announces upcoming concerts and an art exhibition inside. Light penetrates the painted stained glass windows - there it is again: the tranquility and lightness. This early Gothic church is not majestic like many other church buildings, it is cozy, it smiles. It is full of colors.😀
On the way to the gallery, you encounter history: an old weather vane and the church clock, ancient hand-drawn maps reminiscent of bygone times. Under the gallery, there are shining examples of modern art. In between, the 150-year-old organ seems to float. A harpsichord at the foot of the sanctuary awaits the next concert. One can imagine how music can fill and elevate this space without dispelling the tranquility. The acoustics make it possible.
Outside, the Stepenitz River flows past an unusual relic: a baptismal font saved from a desecrated and now demolished church. In the warm season, people can be baptized directly in the river here. A red beech and an oak tree, both about 200 years old, form a dome between the church and the water. Nothing should disturb the tranquility.
The forest on the other side of the Stepenitz River has its own music. Birds, insects, wind, and water compose it. The all-encompassing tranquility conducts and lets the melody sway along the path to the source. A pilgrim path is planned to be created here later.
If you are looking for deceleration, you will find it right here.🙏🏼
