February 20, 2022: Benagil
F. For today, we had chosen a little hike along the southern Algarve. The offshore beaches had disappeared by now and huge red, gray, and beige cliffs towered along the coast. Our hike started in the small village of Alporchinhos and had the goal of reaching the cave that many tourists visit in this area. The Benagil Cave.
The hiking trail followed the coast and the steep rock walls were frequently interrupted by small sandy beaches. Some beaches were only accessible from the water. Most beaches had a steep access due to the high rock walls. There was often a traffic light and a camera at this point, counting the people who came to or left the beach. When there was too much traffic on the beach, the traffic light turned red. I suspect that the beaches are regulated so that all people can stay a sufficient distance away from the potentially unstable rock walls.
On our hike, we often came across wooden fences, especially on cliff edges that were at risk of collapsing or around huge holes in the rock floor that had a direct connection to the sea. The closer we got to the Benagil cave, the more touristy and crowded the hiking trail became. The cave itself was not too spectacular from above compared to the many other cliffs we had seen in the last 2 hours. However, from the water, it must have something special, as you could book many tours with excursion boats there. On our way back to the car, we enjoyed the beautiful weather and the breathtaking landscape once again.
Day 128 - Total tour 8,388 km
