Wow, what an extraordinary place for a night in the 'wilderness'. Who can claim to be able to drive to a glacier by bus! The upcoming glacier lake at Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Iceland with a diameter of around 100km, is really no secret and despite Corona, we expect the previously missing horde of flight tourists, but we are positively surprised. At most three dozen visitors share the first, about 1 km long section of the beach, on which the ice masses separated from the glacier are constantly transported through the glacier lake and then into the sea, only to be immediately washed back onto the black, sun-warmed beach by the waves, where they then melt from huge icebergs into fist-sized formations. A visually stunning spectacle, especially in sunshine, that we don't want to escape the whole afternoon.
It's a shame that the glacier doesn't calve in front of our eyes by chance, although according to our observations, i.e. the amount of ice that is 'delivered' in a day and melts again soon after, this should actually happen frequently. The day ends, as it should, with delicacies in a hidden harbor shack.
Happiness seems to be a matter of food supply ;-)
