As we step out of the plane in Cairns, we are immediately met with warm, humid air, even though it's already evening! After the cold time in the Outback, this is really nice! Cairns has approximately 170,000 inhabitants! There are no skyscrapers here. It reminds me a lot of Florida! Just shops lined up next to each other. I didn't expect it to be so hilly here. The completely green mountains reach right up to the shore!
We spend one night in the hotel and then pick up our camper. It takes almost 2 hours, which annoys me, even though I'm actually relaxed.
Then driving on the left side for the first time... it's a bit strange (okay, honestly, I find it horrible at first, but I quickly get used to it, I just have to concentrate and Daniel next to me watches me first)
We drive to a campsite and are shocked by the prices!
60 dollars per day 😳 - I think that's a lot.
Yes, the place has everything - super kitchens and very modern bathrooms and a pool, etc. The question is whether we need that. But for now, whatever! We do a big shopping and everyone has fun! We definitely have to buy kangaroo steaks too.
In the evening, we barbecue and are a bit frustrated! A slightly downbeat mood because of the really small camper. I'm annoyed that I didn't take care of a bigger one. We try out all possible options for sleeping... it's still very cramped - actually too cramped. In such situations, I always get a slight feeling of homesickness (or even a strong feeling of homesickness 🙄), even though I don't have any, but it feels the same!
The children are also not so thrilled and had imagined it completely differently, but luckily they take it with humor!
Everyone crawls into their tight beds! I can't sleep, I'm thinking about how we're going to solve this for the next 3 weeks! Overall, life in Australia is much more expensive than I imagined. But at least I can follow the Ironman in Frankfurt... ☺️
We get up early because we have booked a trip to Cape Tribulation. That's 'where the rainforest meets the reef'! To make a long story short, we see some great things, but we could have done them ourselves for much less money! The tour is a bit of a rip-off! We were really given the wrong advice or WE should have informed ourselves better. The children are 'bored', but they don't complain! That adds to the feeling from yesterday!
But... we saw crocodiles, fed wallabies (small kangaroos), took a walk through the rainforest, learned a lot of information about the uses of different plants, saw a fantastic beach (swimming prohibited because of the jellyfish), and we drove a lot 'off-road' - so not that bad after all! 😃
We will surely get used to our tight camper too!! We simply spend most of the time outside - at the beaches... I think there are worse things!!
Good night to all of you! 😘
