Change from cloudy to sunny
With a more powerful heater, we had warm enough this night. Today we move to the northern part of the island to explore the rugged coastal region. On the way there, we take our time and visit the town of Gryllefjord, among others.
which in summer has a ferry to the Vesteralen Islands.
We will follow the "Scenic" Route on Senja until it ends in Botnhamn.
The landscape becomes rougher and rockier again, high and jagged ridges of mountains stretch like fingers to the north, there are pretty little villages on the fjord coasts, and there are some sandy beaches. There are only a few tourists left, and we keep wondering what the people in the remote places live on. Apparently, there are enough jobs in administration, trade, and businesses, and every center looks very lively.
For the next four nights, we will be staying at Ingrid and Harald's large private house right on the fjord, with a view of the opposite jagged peaks. We have our own room there and use the guest bathroom and their kitchen.
From a small terrace, we watch an almost unleashed Northern Lights at night, with increasing clear visibility. There seems to have been intense geomagnetic activity, the lights flicker and dance, spread across the whole sky. Gerd can hardly keep up with the photography, new swirls, arcs, and whole areas light up again and again - it's amazing and actually indescribable.
